Ruin of the Reckless is a challenging action rogue-like, with a focus on speed, melee combat and co-op. It has been in development for the past two years, and now Faux-Operative Games have turned to Kickstarter to fund the finishing touches.
There is no doubt that speed is a central mechanic in Ruin of the Reckless. Just watching the first 30 seconds is captivating, and daunting. That will have to be you, if you hope to survive and reach the top of the tower. However, I do foresee an issue… Lag.
While watching the Kickstarter video, I noticed a few points where the computer seemed to struggle with what was happening on screen. It wasn’t major, as I imagine you wouldn’t include that in your promotional video, but it does make me worry. I mean I can play Arma 3 at about 40/50 FPS, but still struggle with games like Prison Architect when there are enough prisoners. Could this prevent some players from enjoying the full experience? And if so, will there be an option to reduce the number of images/effects created when using weapons and spells?
My favourite mechanic is the cards. As you fulfil special challenges while climbing the tower, you will unlock persistent cards. You can equip these to alter your experience. Maybe you are a big baby like me and equip the ‘baby-mode’ card so that you can actually make it further than the first level. Or maybe you are a crazy fool who decides to use the ‘deaths door’ card so that everything, including you, dies in one hit.
Even if you don’t have the money to fund Ruin of the Reckless, you can still get involved by spreading the word. They even have a set of goals just for that. If they get covered on a major gaming website, 1000 followers on their Twitter, or to the front-page of reddit (which they nearly did), all backers will get access to an exclusive character. I highly doubt we count as the first one, but I can dream.
